Youth storytellers have been a significant part of the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival since its third year. The children and teens that perform each year represent thousands of children who participate in school-based storytelling festivals across the state and nation. Storytelling is a valuable part of our community and is being nurtured in the next generation by teachers, parents, and others who understand the power of story. Our nation’s youth shine in their ability to capture our hearts, tickle our funny bones, and paint pictures in our minds with their stories.

In 2018 we combined the local youth storytelling program and the National Youth Storytelling Showcase into one program. Now any interested storyteller ages 5-18 from throughout the nation is invited to audition and participate in the Festival as a “National Youth Storyteller.” Selected tellers will present one 3-9 minute story on stage at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival.

The 2019 Festival will be held on September 5–7, 2019, at the Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah. Youth tellers selected to perform at the Festival will be responsible for their own food, lodging, and travel (to and from the airport, and to and from hotels to the Ashton Gardens), Hotel discounts and airport shuttle services can be found on our Festival FAQ page. Additional information about the Storytelling Festival can be found on the Festival Event Page. Youth storytellers will be given full Festival event passes for themselves and anyone traveling with them.

In order to help as many students have an opportunity to participate as possible, students that have performed at the Festival for three years in a row are asked to take a break for one year before auditioning again.

Youth Teller Auditions

There are three avenues for Youth Tellers to audition:

1. Online Submissions
2. School District Competitions
3. Open Auditions

Now all youth will submit a video recording of their story as their audition. At the school district competition and the open auditions we will be filming each applicant’s whole story.  After we receive all video submissions from these three avenues, we will send them through two rounds of judging by our national panels of judges.

1. Online Submissions: Youth (ages 5-18) from anywhere in the nation are invited to submit an application to perform on the 2018 Timpanogos Storytelling Festival stage (September 6-8) alongside professional storytellers.  Applications are due by Monday, March 11 and should include contact information and a link to a video recording of the story the student will perform, if selected, at the Festival. The link to the electronic video can be in whatever format the applicant is most comfortable (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.), but must be viewable by clicking on the link.

Online Registration Form: Click here to submit an application. All video applications will be reviewed by two national panels of judges.

2. School District Competitions: Many schools in the Alpine School District in Utah hold their own storytelling festivals. Participating schools must submit the names of two representatives to Mary Conrad at meconrad@alpinedistrict.org by 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 1. Elementary schools should submit one lower grade representative and one upper grade representative. Secondary schools may submit two representatives from any grade. These school representatives will audition at the Alpine School District Auditions on March 12 & 13 at Lindon Elementary. At this March audition, tellers will film their whole story which will later be reviewed by two national panels of judges.  If you were not selected to participate for the school auditions, but would still like to be considered, please fill out the online form and either submit a video recording of your story or sign up for a time to be filmed during the open auditions.

3. Open Auditions: Are for those not in involved in school-related festivals and who are unable to submit a video link in the online application, open auditions are held annually for children and teens at the Orem Public Library on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. To schedule an open audition appointment, please click here to fill out the online application form and to choose a time slot for us to video your story.  The cutoff date to schedule an open audition is Monday, March 11, 2019 at 5:00 pm. During these auditions, tellers will film their whole story which will then be reviewed by two national panels of judges.
