Timpanogos was angry. The mountain-god shook the hills and the valleys with the power of his passion. All living things skulked into secret places and waited. Timpanogos cursed the streams until they bore no fish and his people were starving at his feet. Not even the medicine men could discern the cause of his mood, but with dark ceremony did they seek to appease him. For many days and nights they did call to him for mercy.

This story has drifted down from the dim past and is told in the land of the red man. It has traveled far with these migratory people, from its original scene, and thus has taken on an atmosphere and coloring of many Indian countries. It has become typical of the race rather than any one tribe; yet the main events of the drama have always been recounted the same and it seems there must be a foundation of truth.

Long, long ago before white men came to this land, there lived a wealthy tribe of Indians north of here, now known as Idaho. They were very rich and had fine feathers and furs and many other expensive things, making them the most beautifully dressed Indians of all the tribes. Because of this great wealth, they became very proud; thus came about a tradition that none of their beautiful maidens could marry any braves outside of the tribe and no brave could marry outside girls.
